Description

Overview:
The Flowerhorn Cichlid is one of the most striking freshwater aquarium fish, famous for its vivid colors, unique patterns, and the distinctive nuchal hump (kok) on its head. Bred through hybridization of various cichlids, Flowerhorns are hardy, intelligent, and interactive fish, often recognizing their owners and becoming a true centerpiece in the aquarium.

✅ Origin

Unlike most aquarium fish, Flowerhorns are man-made hybrids created in Asia during the late 20th century. They do not exist in the wild but inherit traits from Central and South American cichlids.

🍽️ Feeding

Flowerhorns are omnivores with hearty appetites.

  • Primary Diet: High-quality cichlid pellets (color-enhancing and protein-rich).

  • Supplements: Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, krill, and shrimp.

  • Vegetables: Occasional blanched spinach or peas for balance.
👉 Feed 2–3 times daily in small portions. Avoid overfeeding to prevent digestive issues.

🐠 Tank Mates

Flowerhorns are territorial and aggressive, best kept alone.

  • Possible companions: Large, equally aggressive fish (e.g., large plecos or other big cichlids) in very spacious tanks.

  • Not suitable for: Community aquariums, small or peaceful fish.

⚡ Aggression

Highly aggressive and territorial. Males especially will not tolerate rivals. Provide a large tank with clear territories and sturdy décor.

🎚️ Experience Level

Recommended for intermediate to advanced aquarists. Flowerhorns are hardy but demand:

  • Large aquariums

  • Strong filtration

  • Careful tank management due to waste production and aggression

💧 Water Parameters

  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 gallons for a single adult (larger preferred)

  • Temperature: 78–86°F (25–30°C)

  • pH: 7.4–8.0 (slightly alkaline)

  • Hardness: 8–20 dGH

  • Filtration: Strong — Flowerhorns are messy eaters and high waste producers

  • Water Quality: Keep ammonia/nitrite at 0, nitrates <40 ppm

📝 Quick Tips

  • Provide a large, open swimming space with solid rocks or driftwood (but avoid sharp décor).

  • Perform regular water changes (25–35% weekly).

  • Interact often — Flowerhorns are intelligent and can recognize their keeper.
