Cynotilapia afra “Jalo Reef”

The Cynotilapia afra “Jalo Reef” is one of the most striking mbuna cichlids from Lake Malawi, originating from the rocky reefs of Jalo. Males are especially eye-catching, with their vivid blue bodies highlighted by dark vertical barring and a contrasting bright yellow dorsal fin that glows in the aquarium. Females, while more subdued in coloration, help balance the group and allow males to display their full territorial beauty.

Like other mbuna, the Jalo Reef Afra is a rock-dwelling species that thrives in aquariums with caves, crevices, and rocky structures. Though territorial and semi-aggressive, they are considered more manageable than many larger mbuna, making them a favorite for aquarists who want to keep a vibrant yet balanced Malawi community tank.
