The Geophagus balzanii, also known as the Argentine Eartheater, is a peaceful and fascinating cichlid best known for its unique sand-sifting behavior. Males develop a striking nuchal hump during breeding, adding to their visual appeal.
Origin:
Native to slow-moving rivers and floodplains of Paraguay, Uruguay, and southern Brazil, where they thrive in sandy-bottomed habitats.
Feeding:
Primarily bottom feeders that sift sand through their gills to find food. Offer a diet of high-quality sinking pellets, supplemented with frozen or live foods like bloodworms, brine shrimp, and vegetable matter.
Tank Mates:
Well-suited to peaceful community aquariums with other South American cichlids, tetras, Corydoras, and plecos. Avoid housing with overly aggressive species.
Aggression:
Generally peaceful but may become territorial during spawning. Best kept in small groups to spread out aggression.
