Description
Overview:
The Labidochromis hongi “Sunflower” is a vibrant Mbuna cichlid from Lake Malawi, prized for its intense yellow-orange body, often accented with contrasting blue or violet highlights along the dorsal area. Males display the most striking colors, while females and juveniles are slightly paler but still attractive. This active and hardy species is ideal for African cichlid enthusiasts wanting a bright, energetic show fish for a rocky Malawi setup.
Origin:
Endemic to Lake Malawi, Africa, where it inhabits rocky shoreline areas in the wild. The “Sunflower” is a selectively bred color morph designed to enhance its golden hues.
Feeding:
Omnivorous with a strong preference for vegetable matter. Provide a staple of high-quality spirulina-based pellets or flakes, supplemented with blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach, peas) and occasional protein-rich foods like brine shrimp or mysis shrimp. Avoid excessive meaty foods to prevent digestive issues such as Malawi bloat.
Tank Mates:
Best kept with other Mbuna or Lake Malawi species of similar size and temperament. Suitable companions include yellow labs, red zebras, cobalt blues, and other moderately aggressive Mbuna. Avoid mixing with overly aggressive species or delicate, slow-moving fish.
