Black Nasty Cichlid (Nandopsis haitiensis)

The Black Nasty Cichlid is one of the most aggressive and powerful cichlids in the aquarium hobby, native to the rivers and lakes of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Known for its striking jet-black body with pearly white or silvery speckling, this species is as beautiful as it is formidable. Males grow large with heavy bodies and powerful jaws, while females often display more intense spotting.

This species is not for beginners. Nicknamed the “Black Nasty” for a reason, Nandopsis haitiensis is highly territorial and aggressive, even more so than notorious species like the Jaguar or Red Devil Cichlid. They are best kept singly or in very large aquariums with only the toughest, similarly aggressive tank mates. However, for advanced keepers, their impressive size, power, and rarity make them one of the ultimate “wet pets.”
