Description

Wild Coloured Oscar Cichlid (Astronotus ocellatus)

The Wild Coloured Oscar Cichlid is the natural, wild-type form of the beloved Oscar, native to the Amazon Basin and surrounding river systems in South America. Unlike the bright designer strains (like Tiger or Albino Oscars), the wild Oscar displays an earthy olive-green to brown base coloration with subtle red, orange, and golden highlights, along with its iconic black eye-spot (ocellus) on the caudal peduncle. This more natural look makes it perfect for aquarists seeking authenticity and biotope-style aquariums.

Wild Oscars are intelligent, interactive, and full of personality, often recognizing their owners and even taking food directly from their hands. However, they are also large and powerful cichlids, requiring spacious aquariums and robust filtration. Best kept either singly, in pairs, or with other large, hardy fish, Oscars are true “wet pets” that become the centerpiece of any aquarium.
