Bring the beauty of Africa’s great lakes into your aquarium with Assorted African Cichlids. Known for their dazzling colors, energetic swimming, and unique behaviors, these fish are a favorite for both beginner and experienced aquarists. Our assorted selection includes a variety of species primarily from Lake Malawi (mbuna, peacock, and haplochromis types), as well as occasional species from Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria.

You won’t just be adding fish—you’ll be adding movement, personality, and a living rainbow to your tank.

Quick Facts

  • Scientific Group: Mostly Cichlidae family from East African Rift Lakes

  • Adult Size: 3–8 inches depending on species

  • Lifespan: 6–10 years with proper care

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (territorial, especially males)

  • Diet: Omnivorous (varies by species—some lean more herbivorous, others carnivorous)

  • Ideal Tank Size: 55+ gallons for groups

Care Guide

1. Tank Setup

  • Aquascape: Use plenty of rocks, caves, and crevices to mimic rocky lake shorelines and provide hiding spots. Avoid sharp decor that may injure fish.

  • Substrate: Sand or fine gravel—many species enjoy sifting through it.

  • Plants: Most will uproot or nibble plants; use hardy varieties like Anubias or artificial plants.

2. Water Conditions

  • Temperature: 75–82°F (24–28°C)

  • pH: 7.8–8.6 (alkaline water)

  • Hardness: 10–20 dGH

  • Keep water clean with strong filtration and regular water changes—these fish thrive in pristine, oxygen-rich environments.

3. Feeding

  • Offer a balanced diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with:

    • Spirulina flakes (for herbivores like mbunas)

    • Frozen or live foods (for carnivorous haps and peacocks)

  • Avoid overfeeding—feed what they can consume in 1–2 minutes, twice daily.

4. Behavior & Tank Mates

  • Keep them in species-appropriate groups—many African cichlids do best in slightly overstocked tanks to spread out aggression.

  • Best housed with other African cichlids of similar size and temperament—avoid mixing with docile community fish.

5. Special Notes

  • Males display the brightest colors—females and juveniles are often less vivid but still attractive.

  • Aggression is natural; rearranging decor when adding new fish can reduce territorial disputes.

In Summary:
Assorted African Cichlids are hardy, colorful, and full of life—perfect for aquarists seeking a dynamic, visually stunning display. With proper care, they will reward you with years of active swimming, vibrant colors, and fascinating behavior.
