Checkerboard Cichlid (Dicrossus filamentosus)

The Checkerboard Cichlid is a graceful and beautifully patterned South American dwarf cichlid, named for the checkerboard-like black markings across its slender body. Native to the Amazon River basin, this peaceful species is admired for its delicate appearance, elegant movements, and fascinating behaviors. Males often display elongated fin filaments and more vibrant coloration, while females are smaller and subtler in color.

Checkerboard Cichlids thrive in well-planted aquariums with soft, acidic water and plenty of hiding spots. They are relatively peaceful compared to many other cichlids, making them excellent community fish when housed with small, non-aggressive species such as tetras, rasboras, and corydoras. Breeding pairs will establish small territories, and males may court females with beautiful displays of fin extensions and color.
