Overview:
The Dalmatian Ricefish is a striking, hardy nano fish with a pale, translucent body scattered with distinct black spots, giving it its “Dalmatian” name. Active, peaceful, and easy to care for, it thrives in both aquariums and outdoor ponds, making it a versatile choice for aquarists of all experience levels.

Origin:
The wild-type Oryzias latipes originates from Japan, Korea, and parts of China, typically found in rice paddies, streams, and ponds. The Dalmatian morph is a selectively bred aquarium strain.

Feeding:
Omnivorous and unfussy. Accepts flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. A varied diet enhances color and breeding success.

Tank Mates:
Completely peaceful and ideal for nano community aquariums with small, calm species such as rasboras, small tetras, endlers, and shrimp. Keep in groups of 6 or more for best activity and social behavior.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 64–77°F (18–25°C) (can tolerate cooler outdoor conditions)

  • pH: 7.0–8.0

  • Hardness: Low to moderately hard water

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons

  • Thrives in planted tanks or ponds with open swimming space

Behavior & Personality:

  • Peaceful, social midwater swimmer

  • Hardy and adaptable—can be kept indoors or outdoors in mild climates

  • Active in all light conditions, but looks especially vibrant in natural sunlight

Special Notes:

  • Excellent beginner fish due to hardiness and adaptability

  • Breeds readily, scattering adhesive eggs among plants or spawning mops

  • Can be overwintered outdoors in temperate climates if ponds don’t freeze solid

  • Works well in tubs and water gardens as a mosquito control fish

The Dalmatian Ricefish combines hardiness, peaceful behavior, and unique spotted patterning, making it a charming and versatile addition to both aquariums and small outdoor water features.
