Description

Clarias Catfish (Clarias batrachus & related species)

The Clarias Catfish is a hardy and adaptable species from the Clariidae family, most famously represented by the Walking Catfish (Clarias batrachus). Native to Southeast Asia and parts of Africa, these catfish are known for their elongated, eel-like bodies, long dorsal and anal fins, and distinctive ability to breathe atmospheric air using a special labyrinth organ. This adaptation allows them to survive in oxygen-poor waters and even move short distances across land, giving rise to their nickname “walking catfish.”

In aquariums, Clarias Catfish are tough, fast-growing, and predatory, often reaching large sizes. They will readily eat smaller tank mates, so they are best kept either singly or with other large, robust fish in very spacious aquariums or ponds. Due to their strength and activity, a secure lid and powerful filtration are essential.
